Mormon Dan Butte was possibly named for the prospector who in 1884 discovered ore "about four miles from Ike West's ranche" near the Jumbo District 35 miles west of Winnemucca.[1]

In 1885, "Dan Le Barron" was commonly known as "Mormon Dan".[2]

"Dan La Barron" lived at Big Creek near the north end of the Jackson Range on the east side. La Barron was known as Mormon Dan. His ranch was 6 miles from Bottle Creek and four miles from Willow Creek Ranch.[3]

In 1909, Daniel Moroni LeBaron murdered Thomas New in Winnemucca. This LeBaron was also known as "Mormon Dan" and is probably the same person (note LeBarron here vs. La Barron in Bragg(1905) above).[4][5] LeBaron was sentenced to life imprisonment and parolled in 1913 or 1914.[6]

The phrase "Mormon Dan" is possibly connected to the Mormon Danites. Wikipedia states: "The Danites were a fraternal organization founded by Latter Day Saint members in June 1838, in the town of Far West in Caldwell County, Missouri. During their period of organization in Missouri, the Danites operated as a vigilante group and took a central role in the events of the 1838 Mormon War. Whether or not the Danites existed after the 1847 arrival of the LDS Church in Utah is still debated."[7]

Mormon Dan Peak was possibly named for Dan LeBaron.
