Peter Lassen and His Trail

In 1848, leading a small wagon train, Peter Lassen took the Applegate Trail that branched off the Humboldt route at later Lassen Meadows (modern Rye Patch Reservoir) and continued through the Black Rock Desert and High Rock Canyon of northwest Nevada. At Fandango Pass near the northeast corner of California the Applegate Trail continued west around Goose Lake and then northwest into Oregon while Lassen's Trail turned southwest and followed the Pit River. It ended at the present town of Vina on the Sacramento River, the site of Lassen's Rancho. The Peter Lassen Thread on the OCTA-sponsored Yahoo Overland_Trails Discussion List began on November 11, 2005 when Wendell Huffman asked the question "What did Lassen know when he turned north on the Applegate Trail in 1848?"

Peter Lassen, by Lassen County historian, Tim I. Purdy. "Peter Lassen was born on October 31, 1800, at Farum, Denmark, a small village located fifteen miles from Copenhagen. ... In the fall of 1858, news circulated of the silver discovery in the Black Rock Desert, Nevada. In the spring of 1859, Lassen organized a prospecting party. It was divided into two groups, one led by Captain W William Weatherlow and the other by Lassen—that group consisted of Lassen, Edward Clapper and Lemericus Wyatt. The two groups were to meet at the Black Rock Canyon. Lassen and Company arrived first and remained to wait for Weatherlow’s party—a fatal mistake. On the morning on April 26, 1859, Lassen’s camp was awakened by a gunshot, a fatal one, striking the head of Clapper. Lassen was killed by the second shot. Wyatt escaped and rode horseback 124 miles to Susanville to safety and to relay the tragic event. Who murdered Clapper and Lassen is a question still pondered to this day. Wyatt stated that they had been attacked by Indians. However, many historians are skeptical about Wyatt’s story and speculate that he murdered his comrades.

Lassen Monument (Honey Lake)

In April 1859, Lassen was buried where he was murdered, in the Black Rock Desert. In November 1859, U. Johnson Tutt, Antone Storff, and Joe Kitts went to the Black Rock Desert to retrieve Lassen’s body. However, a number of Honey Lakers were bothered, as the party did not bring back Clapper’s body. On November 27, 1859, Lassen was reburied under the majestic Ponderosa pine tree where he camped the first night he stayed in the Honey Lake Valley.

The Territorial Enterprise reported: “The remains of Peter Lassen, the old pioneer, were buried with Masonic honors, Sunday November 27th on his own ranch at Honey Lake. The attendance upon that occasion, was a very large one for the place.” In May 1990, rock hunters in the Black Rock Desert, at Clapper Canyon, unearthed a skull and upper body portions of a skeleton. After extensive research and computer analysis, the skeleton was determined to be the remains of Edward Clapper. On May 30, 1992, a burial ceremony was held, and the internment of Clapper’s remains placed at the Lassen Monument. ...
