National Public Lands Day

National Public Lands Day is the nation’s largest hands-on volunteer effort to improve and enhance the public lands American’s enjoy. In 2006, about 100,000 volunteers built trails and bridges, planted trees and plants, and removed trash and invasive plants. Join us Saturday, September 29, 2007 for the 14th annual National Public Lands Day and help us care for our land. This year, we will be work on trail construction and recreation site maintenance; riparian protection; and cultural resource inventory and recordation.

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED TO RESTORE CABIN IN HIGH ROCK CANYON

Winnemucca, Nev. The Bureau of Land Management (BLM), in cooperation with the Nevada Outdoor School (NOS), Friends of Black Rock-High Rock and Friends of Nevada Wilderness (FNW), is hosting a National Public Lands Day volunteer event on September 29-30 at Stevens Camp in the Black Rock Desert-High Rock Canyon Emigrant Trails National Conservation Area about 60 miles north of Gerlach, Nevada and 40 miles east of Cedarville, California. Situated along the historic Applegate-Lassen Emigrant Trail, Stevens Camp includes a cabin, modern outhouse, and interpretive signs. The public is invited to attend to learn about the unique natural and cultural resources of the Black Rock-High Rock Country and help restore the interior of the Stevens Camp Cabin, participate in an archeological survey of Massacre Ranch with NCA archeologist Dave Valentine, and more. The volunteer projects will help protect nationally significant historic trails and wilderness areas. Volunteers are welcome to camp on Saturday and are invited to participate in a pot luck dinner with the main dish sponsored by the NOS. People not wanting to camp may be able to arrange motel accommodations in Cedarville. Breakfast on Sunday will be provided by Friends of the Black Rock with a hike to follow. Childrens activities will be offered all day Sunday. National Public Lands Day is the nations largest hands-on volunteer effort to improve and enhance the public lands Americans enjoy. Last year, 100,000 volunteers built trails and bridges, planted trees and plants, and removed trash and invasive plants. Persons wishing to attend the National Public Lands Day volunteer event or who would like more information about it may contact the NCA Park Ranger Justin Robbins at (775) 623-1770 jrobbins@nv.blm.gov or Friends of the Black Rock Program Coordinator Matthew Ebert at (775) 557-2900 me@metric.cc

Why is National Public Lands Day important? Due to budget cuts and lack of hands, there aren't enough employees available to monitor, protect, and restore public lands. In 1994, the first National Public Lands Day was held, encouraging volunteers to give something back and participate in the quality of their Public Lands. In this first year 700 volunteers participated. Last year 100,000 volunteers turned out to participate in events across the country. National Public Lands Day gives everyone a chance to enjoy the Public Lands in their area, while improving quality of their surroundings. Without the help of volunteers on National Public Lands Day, these projects could not be completed!

In Northwest Nevada on September 29 and 30, join with The Friends of Black Rock High Rock, Nevada Outdoor School, The Friends of Nevada Wilderness, and the BLM Winnemucca Field Office at Steven's Camp and Massacre Ranch.
