Liutenant Edward Griffin Beckwith led the Beckwith-Gunnison expedition after Gunnison was killed.

In 1854, the Beckwidth-Gunnison expedition travel through the area to Honey Lake.

Lorry states that in 1854, Beckwith crossed south of the Seven Troughs Range, camped at Porter Spring, traversed the Selenite Range (where the sketches for the Valley of the Mud Lakes lithograph were created) and stayed at Buffalo Spring.^[1]
