Hays Canyon Range is east of Surprise Valley. Hays Canyon and Range are named for John C. Hays, "who commanded the Washoe Regiment in the Pyramid Lake War"[1]
The GNIS record states that the name "Hays Canyon Range" was proposed by Ira A. Lutsey, Technical Editor, Nevada Bureau of Mines in 1968.
