The Sheldon - Hart Mountain National Wildlife Refuge is located north of the Black Rock Desert, near [[Nevada State Route 8A]].

== Geology ==
The Lone Pine mining district is to the west of the area, straddling the California/Nevada border.  The area consists of basalt lava flows<ref>"[http://www.nbmg.unr.edu/dox/mla/mla_31-86.pdf Mineral Resources of the Sheldon Contiguous Study Area, Washoe County, Nevada]," Mineral Lands Assessment 31-86, 1986.</ref>.

Elsewhere, there are mercury deposits.

In 2014, a earthquake swarm<ref>"[http://www.cnn.com/2014/11/08/us/nevada-earthquake-swarm/index.html?c=homepage-t&page=1 A swarm of earthquakes buzzes underground in Nevada]," 08-Nov-2014</ref> occurred in the region, probably associated with a caldera that is detectable via a gravity anomaly<ref name="USGS1984"/>.
